Our History
AGA Health Foundation (AGAHF) hitherto called Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) Hospital and later Edwin Cade Memorial Hospital (AngloGold Ashanti Hospital) was established in 1st Feb 1930.
It was renamed after the first CEO of AGC – Mr. Edwin Cade on the 30th April 2003 by Dr. Sam Jonah, the then CEO of Ashanti Goldfields Company
The Hospital was situated at the Engineers Hill (now Green Tank H2O Treatment Plant). It was re-located to the present site after some years when expansion was necessitated.
Since then, ongoing refurbishment and development has continued to take place, and what used to be 2 block apartment is now a fully-fledged Hospital. Its initial mandate was to care for the workers, and later dependents of the mine but with time, In addition to the mandates spell out above, the functions of the hospital were extended to the Obuasi community.
The hospital In December 2015, was made to become a private and a business entity, wholly-owned subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti Company Ltd and exist as one of the 3 Sustainability Departments Units (SDU) of Obuasi Mine.
Current Status
The hospital currently is an enhanced primary healthcare facility (providing acute and secondary/tertiary specialist services) licensed by Health Facility and Regulatory Authority (HeFRA) and also accredited by National Health Insurance Authority and the Nurses & Midwife Council as an examination center. The Hospital can now boast of five wards and the other major service areas listed below:
• Out Patient Department • In-Patient Department • Emergency Unit • Occupational Health Center
• Audiology Department • Imaging Department • Laboratory Department • Pharmacy Department
• 2 Operating Theaters • Physiotherapy • Public Health and Health Promotion • Specialist Services
The hospital is one of the largest referral Hospitals in Ashanti Region with 102 Beds with room to expand to 120 bed capacity.
AGAHF is proud of its history and tradition, it is held in very high esteem by the local community, making it a hospital where patients want to come for treatment. We remain faithful to the mission of our founders and we are committed to their pursuit of providing excellent care now and into the 21st century
